The School caters for more than 1000 trainees across 30 medical specialties and offers programmes at a variety of teaching centres across the capital. Working with a diverse healthcare population across London, trainees have the opportunity to manage a range of patients and medical conditions in urban communities.

Vision

The vision for the London School of Medicine and Medical Specialties is to provide:

  • World class education for world-class healthcare
  • Excellence of postgraduate training and education
  • Production of the clinical leaders of tomorrow

Training programme

All trainees embark on a programme of Internal Medicine Training (IMT) as the first stage of physicianly training. IMT is a three year programme which will prepare doctors to become a medical registrar and provide them with the skills needed to manage patients presenting with a wide range of general medical symptoms and conditions. Experience in intensive care medicine, geriatric medicine and outpatients is mandated and trainees will receive simulation training throughout the programme. Following completion of this 3 year IMT programme, trainees can then complete 4-5 years of training in a higher specialist training programme alongside further experience in internal medicine in order to obtain a certificate of specialist training in internal medicine with a specialty. Some specialties (so-called group 2 specialties, asterisked in the list below) will recruit trainees who have completed 2 years of IMT and completed MRCP(UK).
