Training programme
All trainees embark on a programme of Internal Medicine Training (IMT) as the first stage of physicianly training. IMT is a three year programme which will prepare doctors to become a medical registrar and provide them with the skills needed to manage patients presenting with a wide range of general medical symptoms and conditions. Experience in intensive care medicine, geriatric medicine and outpatients is mandated and trainees will receive simulation training throughout the programme. Following completion of this 3 year IMT programme, trainees can then complete 4-5 years of training in a higher specialist training programme alongside further experience in internal medicine in order to obtain a certificate of specialist training in internal medicine with a specialty. Some specialties (so-called group 2 specialties, asterisked in the list below) will recruit trainees who have completed 2 years of IMT and completed MRCP(UK).
